Jasmyn Fyffe, Founder and Artistic Director

Jasmyn Fyffe is a dancer, choreographer and teacher. She began her dance training as a young child in Toronto, Ontario. Fyffe’s formal training began at the Ontario School of Ballet, Interplay School of Ballet and continued at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, Ballet Creole, and York University where she graduated with an Honours Double Major in Dance and Kinesiology in 2007.While studying at York, Fyffe discovered a love and passion for choreography and performance and decided to pursue this as her career. Upon graduation Fyffe founded her company ASM Dance (As the Spirit Moves).

Since ASM Dance’s inception, Fyffe has choreographed and performed in the company’s growing repertoire, which includes: Warfare (an excerpt), Thank You, Living in a World, We Shall Overcome, Be Lifted Up, Shout!, Hosanna, Revive My Soul, Bruised Deceit, and Blurred Vision.

Fyffe’s dedication and thirst for creation and performance has led the company to many venues and subsequent opportunities. To date, they have performed in: Squigg Festival, Junction Arts Festival, Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival, The Rivoli, CUSO-VSO Dance for the World Benefit, An Open Door – Blue Ceiling Dance Production, and Project Dance Toronto.

As an independent dancer, Fyffe has performed for KasheDance, Calu Entertainments, Linda Garneau and InDuo Danceworks. She has also been invited to perform and teach in the Project Dance Festival in New York City and Atlanta. In addition to this, Fyffe performed in the touring musical UMOJA at the Elgin Theatre in February 2008.

67-dsc_3781Ashlee Deweerd, Assistant Artistic Director

Ashlee has been training in various styles of dance for 18 years with a strong core in ballet, jazz and lyrical. She also teaches and choreographs for competitive and recreational dancers and gymnasts. Ashlee has been dancing professionally with ASM Dance since it was birthed in September 2007. She has danced in many festivals and events from Toronto to New York City with the company.

Andrew Blackwood

After having explored the world of classical music across The United States, Andrew returns to Toronto and his love for dance which was first experienced in the Claude Watson Dance Program as a high school student at Earl Haig in 1996. This formal introduction to ballet and modern dance was complimented by his natural charisma and passion for the arts which he now lends to ASM. He has been training and performing with ASM Dance since June 2008. With recent performances at Squigg Fest 2008, Heaven’s Rehearsal 2008, The Evolution of Gospel Music 2009 and An Open Door 2009, Andrew’s love for dance continues to grow as does his expression of life through movement.

Born and raised in Victoria, B.C., Kathy Lewis has been privileged to train with wonderful teachers, including Arabella Martin (Sinclair Academy of Performing Arts), Gini Foley (Stelly's Secondary), Jacques Lemay (Canadian College of Performing Arts), Karen Duplisea (Ryerson University), and Julia Sasso (York University). This past summer she enjoyed dancing with Calú Entertainments at the Canadian National Exhibition, and with Jasmyn Fyffe's company, As the Spirit Moves. She will graduate from York University's BFA Dance Program this June. Kathy also enjoys working on her classical/opera singing, as well as teaching contemporary dance.

Jasmine began training in her home town of Cambridge, Ontario. At 16 she joined the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble; the group traveled to the Ukraine, where they participated in the “Days of Kiev” festival. After highschool Graham attended York University and The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. Since graduating, Graham performed Tedd Robinson’s Fruit Studies at The Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa, and has been creating work and performing in Toronto. She is currently looking forward to a number of upcoming projects, including choreographing and performing with independent choreographers in Toronto and Montreal.

Sandra is a graduate of Ryerson University Honours Dance program. She has continued to train in contemporary, jazz and ballet with various schools and companies including Toronto Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre David Earle, George Brown College and with Linda Garneau. Sandra has choreographed for and/or performed at; the Toronto International Dance Festival, Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival, Nuit Blanche, Cambridge Arts Festival, Royal City Musicals, Choreographer's Ball in Waterloo and at the Habourfront Centre in a work by Robert Desrosiers. Sandra successfully co-produced a professional holiday themed dance show last year at the Registry Theatre, Kitchener. Sandra has worked in collaboration with two other dance/visual artists to combine dance and installation art. They have performed their work at several venues including Toronto's DeLeon Gallery, Artscapes Barn's and the Harcourt Art Gallery in Edmonton Alberta. She is thrilled to be a part of ASM Dance this season.

Colleen Phillips

Colleen has danced for several years and is excited to join ASM as an apprentice this season.  She received her training with COBA, Ballet Creole, Debbie Wilson and Donna Greenberg of Ballet Espressivo. She also danced and performed with SCYDE, Caribbean Dance Theatre, and trained with Andrea Douglas of Children's Caribbean Dance Theatre. Colleen's passion for dance led her to use the artform as a vehicle to motivate and inspire young people. She now spends her time giving back to the community by offering children subsidized professional dance training through “Ishay School of Dance”, a non profit dance organization. Colleen continues to inspire the youth to recognize their fullest potential in all areas of their lives.
